Hey all, has anyone heard about the new rock gym called Carabiners in New Bedford? It's not open yet, but they do have a web site:http://www.carabiners.com. Anyways, there is no opening date posted. It just says to check back. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about when it is going to open. Thanks, Craig

The website mentions a "Spring '04" opening, but this should be taken with a grain of salt. This gym has been under construction since at least the summer of '99. I climbed a few times with one of the owners, but I think he sold his share and went off on his own ventures. The pictures look pretty sweet though and I'd love to get down there to climb. As far as I remember, the gym is not a renovated hanger, silo, warehouse, etc. The building was constructed solely for the purpose of housing the gym. The original plan was for 60+ foot walls, bouldering caves, locker rooms, and a weight training area. From the start it has been a rather ambitious project... When it was first conceived I believe it was to be the biggest in the world... or so went the rumors on the new england climbing web sites and forums. Can't wait to see it open!! Kevin

I called Carabiners this week and they are still not open! They say that all of the climbing walls are complete and that they are just working on other stuff...like door handles etc. They told me that they would be opening within 3 weeks. Which is 3 weeks too late for me because I am on cape cod cooling my heels with NO climbing. Actually, I am going to check out Willy's rock wall...will post photos...

OH wow, I've been checking the carabiners website for the last few years, and finally gave up checking up on it. I'm surprised that it's actually opening. I always thought it was just someone's mock website.. ^_^ ;; It's hard to tell from the picture, whether or not the climbing wall is made of "painted" plywood or the newer "textured" concrete walls (which I imagine would be very costly). Doesn't matter... looks cool. Has anyone check out Metrorock? It's a pretty nice gym! - Steveo

"I'd say in 1996, we first thought about opening a gym," Mr. Caton said. "Most anybody who climbs thinks about opening a gym. We went a few steps further. But we want this to be a mainstream experience, not catering to just the advanced climbers." Yeah... sounds like a wonderful place....
