Rock Canyon in Utah a local crag has had some climbs destroyed due to irresponsible mining. Please help save this area:
I read this thread on www.jerkamer.com:
It was shocking last night to hear about a Rock Canyon landowner who has started mining for landscaping boulders. He has illegally removed quartzite from rock canyon to put in people's yards for decoration, and is now applying for a permit to do it legally. This threatens Rock Canyon climbing as we know it. There is currently a petition you can sign at the Quarry, so I recommend that you sign it (if you are in Provo).

From what I understand, this guy does own some of the Rock Canyon land. Yet, he has no mining permit. We can write letters and hope we can save these crags.

Please visit http://www.rockcanyonalliance.org/. I saw disconcerting signs this morning while climbing. Apparently a land developer wants to turn the mouth of the canyon into a quarry. From what I read, it seems that everything behind Red Slab and Ed & Terry Wall is protected (the entrance), but nothing west of it is. There's an effort underway to purchase the rights and protect the entirety of the canyon forever. Take a minute to write a letter.

i emailed john bennett today and recieved a prompt reply. give his e-mail to all rope mates relatives or anyone for that matter.
i shared a ledge with a big horn sheep last year while climbing and enjoy the beauty and geologic contrast imensly. i would hate to have future generations loose the opportinites that i have had because someone wants to make a quick buck.
the land owner will get money out of this no matter what. i hope it is not from quarrying quartzite!

Last Saturday, March 28th, there was a public meeting at the mouth of Rock Canyon to announce the submission of a proposal to activate a mining claim in Rock Canyon. The subsequent develop would substantially change the use the look of Rock Canyon.
170 people showed up to the meeting to voice disapproval with Provo City. There is also a protest planned at the steps of the Utah County Courthouse in downtown Provo (the intersection of Center St. and State St.). The protest is Saturday, April 4th, at noon.
Future public hearings at the Provo City Counsel have yet to be schedule.

The city council chambers were full last night, showing deep concern over the future condition of Rock Canyon. Good to know that neighbors, climbers, hikers, environmentalists, etc. are all actively involved in this. There are essentially four outcomes that I understand:
1. The mine becomes active destroying access to the canyon.
2. The mine becomes active preserving easements for hiking and climbing.
3. The city and LLC wins a lawsuit over the complicated history of ownership of the 84-acres in question, and shuts down any mining attempts permanently.
4. This mining proposal is a guise for the owner to get a high bidding price from the city and LLC for his mining claim/land ownership rights. If the land is purchased or traded for, mining attempts would be shut down permanently.
How can we help?

"The city has expressed an interest in preserving the canyon, but Mayor Lewis Billings said the application must be treated as any other. He said Davis "will be allowed to go through the normal rules." But he offered suggestions for those interested in fighting the proposal, including collaborating with Red Slab LLC, an entity set up by Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, and Phil Lowry, a Provo lawyer, to acquire the land and quell extraction attempts.
"What can the public do? The public can participate in the public hearing before the Planning Commission," Billings said. "Those who want to preserve Rock Canyon may also want to consider working with Red Slab LLC."
