I may have to go with the Huber brothers - change my vote. The hard lines they've done on the Ogre and in India set them in a class by themselves. The question was all around, not the best rock climber, with mountaineering being specifically mentioned. Seems to rule out Hill, Graham, and Kauk in my opinion.

jmlangford - I was being very sarcastic. Of course I know mountaineering is real climbing. Of course you will probably never see me do it. Peace out.

Whymper generally relied on his guides to yard him up things - I would put him in a visionary role rather than a good climber.

It was almost two pages on replies before I saw the name of the great WOLFGANG GULLICH. My personal hero. But,that didn't answer the question. All-arounder; ALEX LOWE [ This Message was edited by: rickoldskool on 2002-05-01 10:14 ]

I believe that the great Gengis Khan summitted all 14 8000m peaks back in the day using jute ropes and the bones of his enemys as axe picks and crampons plus I heard he pulled wicked hard on some of those boulders in that little place Fred Nicole likes to hang out at. Sure, I even heard fred gives all his credit to the big "G" for giving him visionary powers to makes sick moves look like the crushing of eastern europe under the great moguls fist.

So far, by mention in the post... (WITH MORE THAN ONE MENTION) we have-------- LYNN HILL---10 ALEX LOWE---8 HUBERS---7 REINHOLD MESSNER---6 JIM BRIDWELL---3 CHILD, CROFT, GRAHAM, GULLICH and ROBBINS---2 With one vote each are BECKEY, BUHL, BONINGTON, ANKER, KOR, DONINI, KAUK and WHYMPER. See if we can add to or get a decisive choice here for ALL-AROUND greatest climber ever!!! and for BLACKSAMBA we have KHAN and NICOLE. [ This Message was edited by: polarwid on 2002-05-03 15:18 ]

I'll have to vote for Alex Lowe. He's one of my hero's both on and off the rock. I have yet to read or hear anyone who didn't hold him in the highest respect as a person and a climber.

For the old timers I'd go with Whymper and Rebuffat, then more recent, Buhl and Bonatti. Not sure in the present. Lots of good candidates.

Rock climber? You had it right, it's Beckey, I think. For prolific route discovery. If you include aid in the equation, then maybe Warren Harding, for the Messner-like feat of doing the Nose when everyone else thought it was impossible, and STILL not taking himself seriously. Mountaineering, obviously Messner. There can be no contest. Bonnatti and Weissner are also true greats of our endeavor. Modern climbers, I would nominate Dean Potter and John Bouchard, chips off the same block. Light, fast, and bolder than anyone dared imagine possible. Modern Messners. Hmm, there seems to be a theme here. Messner just ends up being the ultimate benchmark. So perhaps a steel cage match between Messner and Beckey is in order?

It is difficult for me to even conceive of the mental places that Messner ventured into when he was my age. He is primarily known as a mountaineer, but before ever going to the Himalaya he had accomplished solo first ascents on dolomite rock that were far ahead of their time.

I would, once again, agree with what people have to say here. Except Dave Graham. All that guy does is clip bolts, although what he does is friggin' hard. One name that hasn't been mentioned, but should be isTomaz Humar. He is pretty much an unknown over here. He has soloed the South Face of Dhaulagiri (8000 M) with dificulty in the M7 range I believe, he has also soloed Reticent Wall in the Valley which is A5. By the way he should thank Pass the Pitons Pete for giving him the topo for the route. He has done many more heinous mountaineering ascents in the Himalya, which you should read about before trying to find "the best all arounder." Check out this link to his site- http://www.humar.com/dhaul_exp/indexnew/indexnewfr.htm. I don't know how he free climbs, but A5 to hard Himalaya routes solo, deserves more credit and mention than he gets.

I would have to go with a tie between a couple of great climbers. Silvo Karo (sp?) some of the stuff he did with Janez Jeglic is amazing. Layton Kor... he didn't pull too hard with his own hands, but this guy climbed a lot of ground breaking stuff. Wolfgang Gullich... one word "wow" that guy did more things in his short life than i can ever imagine. Alex Lowe... another great all arounder... and unlike quite a few of the others... he had a solid resume of mixed and ice climbs as well. Messner... He is amazing. There are many others that should probably make this list... but alas, I am forgeting them. Oooh, one more.. Jean Christolph Lafialle (sp)... A5, 5.14d, M-10, WI-6...the numbers speak for themselves.

Can the Huber brothers catch him? Keep voting and we will find out!!!

Hi ! I think that we have to agree in some BASIC criteria to choose the best ALL AROUND climber ever.... I beleive everybody will agree that MOUNTAINERING occupies a PREPONDERANT place among the different climbing modalities (much much more important than bouldering, in my opinion). So, i think that in order to qualify for the BEST ALL AROUND CLIMBER EVER, a climber should have AT LEAST ONE 8000m SUMMIT, WITHOUT USE OF OXIGEN AND BY A TECHNICAL ROUTE. If we agree on this , many climbers already mentionned automatically disappear from the list, like the actual first "Lynn Hill". Just my 2 cents [ Este Mensaje fue editado por: mauta el 2002-05-21 19:34 ] [ Este Mensaje fue editado por: mauta el 2002-05-22 13:06 ]

Messner gets my vote if I can only have one... and now that Dave Graham has done so many sick sport routes he needs to fill in the empty spots with some alpine.

I don't agree with requiring an 8k peak for best allround climber, since so much other than climbing ability influences this. Bonnington is an excellent climber, but at least as good at logistics - but i don't think the latter should count. My vote has to go to Bonatti - really amazing achievements on all fronts, and considering when he did them, it's quite unbelieveable. And even if Dave Graham hasn't done any alpine or trad climbing, that's no reason to say he's just clipping bolts. Maybe he'd say that you're just clipping friends and messing with pro, where you could be climbing hard... Graham's not the greatest climber ever, but he is probably the technically greatest...
