I was planning on a trip to the New this weekend, and noticed that Bridge day is this Saturday. The article says the bridge will be closed and 200,000 people will attend this event. Have any of you guys tried to climb during a "bridge day" weekend? Is this a bad idea? Any suggestions on where I should avoid? Maybe I'll just stick with Summersville...

I was planning the same trip, but I am not getting good responses from people when I ask if I should go up. I have been told that travel from one side of the gorge to the other will be difficult if it is even possible, limiting camping and climbing options. Thousands of rednecks with trucks selling crap and overwhelming crowds and noise. I am not going to go down there. Too bad...

In reply to: Thousands of rednecks with trucks selling crap and overwhelming crowds and noise. That's what i'm afraid of as well. I was planning on meeting people, but I might go somewhere else instead... Is anyone out there going despite the bridge day?

climbing during bridge day weekend is not an issue. The bridge is only sort of closed (its just one lane each direction so it takes a LONG time to get accross). Your best bet it so camp on the side of the bridge you want to climb on and stay on that side till after the festivites are over. Its a blast to go to bridge day as well... have a great time! KK

I am planning on driving to NRG Sat evening and maybe walking out on the bridge. My buddy is meeting me Sunday to climb. How tough will be getting from the Kaymoor side to the other side on Sunday morning around 8:30? Should we just plan on climbing on the same side as I camp on (at Rogers)? AKA_FRED check out the route db for West Virginia. "The New" = New River Gorge. The best sport crag on the east coast.

I beleive what happens is that they officially close the Northbound side of the bridge, then the Southbound lanes become the only travel lanes, 1 lane will go North, 1 lane will go south. It creats a major traffic jam, but doesn't make the bridge impassable . . . better to get a REAL early start if you plan on crossing the bridge. The better solution is to stay on "your" side of the bridge and avoid restaurants, etc . . . weather looks crappy . . hope all goes well!

I'm going down Friday with some friends to climb, camp, then hit up bridge day Saturday and climb some more after we get bored of watching BASE jumpers. And I was told that the bridge is totally closed both sides, except to emergency vehicles. So you have to take the long way around to get from one side to the other. I'd definitely plan on climbing on the same side as your camp.

I've been to bridgeday for the past two years, it's no big deal to climb during the day. Traffic on the bridge is closed, so it's about a 20 minute detour to get around, but what I plan on doing is to do the detour, park on the northern side of the bridge, check out the jumpers for an hour or so, then go climb at Bubba City. I'm bringing a group out from Virginia Tech to check it out and climb for the day at bubba. So yeah, stay away from the gorge on bridgeday! More climbing for me! Ha. It's wild to watch people jump off of that beautiful bridge, and the view of the gorge is fantastic. Seriously, Fayetteville has the best climbing scene and some of the coolest people. If you ever get the chance to climb there, why pass it up just because 250,000 people are throwing a party on the bridge? Mark
