Class 4 is exposed, but easy climbing. Class 5 is exposed, but hard climbing.

Are you talking about ratings such as 5.10 vs. class 4 climbing or the length and commitiment required on routes such as a class 4 route taking a certain amount of hours?

Add to it that 4th class is more of a "scramble" where fifth class you are actually climbing to make progress up the rock.

There isn't much of a difference between Class4 and 5.1. Just like there isn't much of a difference between 5.5 and 5.6. It's very subjective.

That said, you really shouldn't be using ratings such as Class4 or 5.1 to decide whether to rope up. That decision should be based on your personal experience and relative confidence...not numbers.
