Hey there. I recently moved back to Alaska and I need some info about ice climbs and partners in the Anchorage area ( I was in Fairbanks before). What is fun and around WI3? What kind of travel times am I looking at? And, I was hoping to get a time frame for the Anchorage season?
Cheers

Anchorage has some great ice climbing within 30 minutes or less of the heart of downtown on the Seward Highway. You literally climb right off of the highway, it is VERY convinient, and there is some REALLY good ice too. The season probably will start within the next 2 or 3 weeks and last until mid march. Good luck.

Head North to Eklutna, about 45 minutes from Anchorage. There are around 6-10 climbs that are in the 2-4 range and they're not that far apart from each other. It is a lot quieter than the Seward Highway but it is friggn' freezing in the canyon. I'm hoping ice will be there around Halloween.

yah dude, we're hoping to get in some ice climbing this weekend. Upon walking around campus at UAA today, we had ice on the ground that was frozen the entire day, and it is getting cold, REALLY fast. So i'd say taht Eklutna might have some solid ice this weekend, hopefully.

yesterday when it was 40 degrees i thought heading to eklutna might be a waste of time but now that its snowing and a bit colder it might be worth checking out. we'll see tomarrow. let me know what you saw if you end up going this weekend.

It'll probably be mid november or early december before we have any decent WF ice near sea level around anchorage. There is already some decent WF ice developing up higher in the mounains, but it would all require some hiking to get to right now. I would suggest one of the half-dozen or so easily accessible glaciers in the area, mostly in Portage Valley, Matanuska, etc.

Hey there. I just checked the replies tonight Nov 4. Thanks for the info. Is anyone interested in swinging the tools? I could use a little conditioning but I am game! Drop me a note.
Cheers

My buddies went up to Eklutna and climbed ice all day yesturday while I bootpacked and snowboarded in awesome untracked powder all day yesturday at Hatcher's. I'm probably going iceclimbing today at Eklutna with them if they go again. The ice is here my friends!
