This is just a heads up to all the Utah folks out there. Last week there were over 10 cars broken into around Salt Lake Area, all of them climber's cars... all of them loosing alot of gear. All of this nasty activity was within a 15 mile radius from the Black Diamond / Rock Reation Area. Alot of good people have lost alot of gear. Please beware, and keep a look out for anything strange. I'm sure you could call either Black Diamond or Rock Reation for more info on the break-ins.

I've never heard of putting a padlocked Bear Box in your car, but this might be a good time to try it out if you're in the affected area.
Now then, if we can just figure out what stuff that gets posted on eBay is being offered by the thieves.....

I would never think about stealing someone's gear. Nevermind the fact that I'm not a dirty thief, I would see using stolen gear as asking for a bad omen. What goes around comes around. The biner that breaks and kills you is gonna be the one you stole from another climber.

A Cheap Way to Go---Yosemite Valley has long had thefts---I used army ammo cans--drill two hole--slide a u-bolt or two....and chain the box w gear to the seat frame or frame in the trunk.
Try it!!

As much as well all love to do it, plastering your car with climbing manufacturers stickers is like putting a "I have gear inside" sticker on your car. I would go with what everyone else said and find some way to lock your gear up in a crate/box type thingin the car.

Worrying about getting my stuff stolen would take the fun out of climbing. Its pretty low to steal some guys climbing stuff.

I live in SLC and have seen it, and have seen suspicious amounts of gear in pawn shops. I hink they kipe it and sell it for crank. Lock em up and outta sight. In teh canyons it is REALLY easy to tell what cars are the cars of climbers.

You could leave a note with your rack saying that you're carrying a couple of peices of party pooper gear that you've altered in such a way that they will never hold a fall. It won't get your gear back but it will mess with the guy's head. If they're pawning it though the bastards probably wouldn't even care.
Don't buy used gear from unknown sources.

I heard a story recently regarding stolen gear that gave me the heeby jeebies. There is a climbing area near here called Taylors Falls that is a very popular place for both climbers and tourists. Some guys we talked to at Red Wing (Another climbing area) said that they actually had their cams stolen from their top rope at Taylors Falls. The thieves left a single nut in as an anchor!

I always cover my climbing stuff that I leave in my car. Out of site, out of mind. If nothing else, cover your stuff to keep it out of site. A lockbox chained to the seat frame is a good idea. However, a lockbox in a car is kinda calling out to a potential thief that there is important stuff in ther (otherwise why would it be locked up). Sorry to hear about the thefts, hopefully they catch some people and crack some skulls.

I was climbing with a fellow whose car had gotten broken into after climbing at the S-curves in LCC. It is really distressing that people mess with others who are enjoying nature. Keep your wallets, MP3 players, all valuables at home. Better yet, perhaps some of us locals could "hide out" and find the bastard(s) in the act!!!
