Hello, welcome to climbing.

There are lots of books available, and lots of info on sites like this. I would say the best way to get knowledge is to climb. As long as you are climbing with an experienced partner you will remain safe and pick up practical and relevent knowledge.

I'm some what new to the sport as well. Took a class last fall and have been climbing all spring.

The only thing I have done to improve my skills is to climb as often as I can. Me and a friend decided to take the class, buy the gear and just go. We've read a bunch of books, and are always checking and rechecking to make sure we're doing things safe. But just getting out and trying things. Just from being at a crag you'll start to figure out better technique. Either from trying it or seeing someone else do it.

Welcome to the sport, and enjoy.

Welcome to the most addicting thing since crack. A good book to read is John Long's How to rock climb. Good to give you basic knowledge, however, best tool is to climb

Good luck and welcome

Buy "Mountaineering The Freedom of the Hills". It is the best money you'll ever spend.

Welcome to the fun!

I just started a week ago and I love it! A lot of the people on this site are very helpful and give you good tips on what to do and what not to do.

Have fun

Drew

like everyone else said just climb. the only advice I can give you is to climb with someone who knows what they are doing. when i started my friends and i didn't know what the hell we were doing. this wasn't very safe so go with womeone who knows whats up.

right now i am reading " a trailside series guide Rock climbing" by don mellor. i think it is very good general beginners book. it has illustrative pictures of setups and foot techniques. also very easy reading to learn more about the sport.

You could like how more experienced climbers go up. And just climb and have fun. You need a lot of practice.

Dude BUY THIS BOOK .. it was recommended to me so I flipped through it at the store ... as a new climber myself I was amazed with the amount of fundemental information and answers to the questions I've been asking myself.

A value at $25 considering it covers so much information ... you need to buy 4 or more books at $12 to $20 to get the info found in this one book.
"Its the climbers bible."
