Hola, Thinking about heading over for Turkey Day. Few questions: 1. How are the crowds on Holiday Weekends? LATARDVILLE, or not? 2. Is Diaz Dome access still a cluster? 3. Is Tuttle creek the only or best camping in the area? I've been to Tuttle Creek some 20 years ago to camp and fish. But it is pretty limited facilities (e.g. the outhouses were in bad shape) Flush shitter with sinks would be ideal for my chica with contact lenses. (no RV campgrounds) I've climbed at Alabama, but only on Sharks Fin. We didn't have time for much else, though I did boulder way out there someplace. Recommended routes? New recommended routes? Anything else? Much thanks!!!

1. I can't imagine the climbing there being very crowded... ever. It's simply not that well known. Others may be able to give you better info. 2. I don't know. 3. Tuttle creek campground has been significantly improved. It's still free, though they ask for donations. The pit toilets are well kept. The sites all have picnic tables and fire rings. Honestly it's one of the best campgrounds I've been to, and is hands down the best BLM campground I've ever seen. Unfortunately they have no sinks, but they do have some a few spigots with running water (non-potable) that's piped from a tank that's filled from the creek. Have fun... ~Adam~

In reply to: but they do have some a few spigots with running water (non-potable) that's piped from a tank that's filled from the creek. I have several points of empirical evidence that the water in the spiggots is safe to drink, though having done so, and having read the above, I will likely avoid doing so in the future :)

Diaz Dome is closed, so no longer a cluster. Every time I've been out to the Alabama Hills I've encountered either 0 - 2 other climbing parties. Should be okay for Thanksgiving.

My favorite routes/walls 1. Western Wall. One of the best I have seen in the Alabamas. 2. Eye of Horus Wall, Jackel Headed Women is a fun climb. 3. Smaltz Dome. Cool positions, might want a piece of gear or two for the bottom..... 4. The Corridors. Some fun ones in there. 5. The Alabama dome. Great rock for the Alabamas. Hope it helps.

In reply to: perf jdouble!! thx! Are these good for cold weather? i.e. are they in sun most of the day? or part e.g. am vs. pm? Thx! Actually, most of the climbs that I have been on are situated on those cleaner north faces. I believe Western Wall is more of an eastern exposure. The DMX wall also faces East I believe, as well as the Tall Wall. You do have to hunt a bit for sunny walls in the Alabamas. On the dirt road on the way into the Whitney Cave area you have a few climbs that face South, they are about a quarter mile down the road from the main paved road. You drive right by them and they are pretty fun. Go check out the Whitney Cave as well if you have not, and the steeper wall at the parking area has some good 11's, in the shade, but the sun is not too far away. The wall behind the cave area (in the guide) is also more of a Southern Exposure and has pretty good rock. Hope it helps. Will cross my fingers for warmer weather for you guys.

Well, windy, cold...at least the sun was shining. Saturday sucked and Sunday...well, you probably went home. The next time you are up here at the Hills, give me a shout. Damn it is hard to find partners here. Lone Pine is either tweekers or cowboys. Smokey Joe otherwise known as The Chossman P.S. Diaz Dome is not closed. But I got to say that to appease the landowner. And only about 20 square feet of her land touches Diaz Dome. But still DO NOT park on Indian Springs Road or ANYWHERE within the Alabama Hills Residential Area. Send me a PM and I'll give you the secret beta of an approach and parking entirely on BLM or DWP land.

Sorry Smokey Joe. We ended up going to Santa Barbara/Ventura. Still got weather on Sat so we did go home early. Good news is I found out how nice Pine Mtn is. So now we have multiple options next time. Gracias for the beta offer. Hit ya on the pm next time we head your way. Cheers, Munge
