Also he does not hold the speed record on California Fourteeners and I believe he only did 13 of 'em, skipping Shasta. The speed record was claimed by an umemployed computer geek with gumption who beat Hans' time by about 4 days, INCLUDING Shasta....

A few years ago my friend Mike was climbing in Yosemite and met Hans. They where introduced through a mutual friend and Mike introduced him self and ask Hans what his name was. Hans responded buy saying “I’m Hans Florine.” Hans seamed surprised that Mike didn’t automatically know who the hell he was. It was almost like saying “I’m Hans Florine, speed climber extrordinar’, all the ladies call my Hollywood Hans, but you can call me Mr Florin, petty mortal.” Soon after Hans asked Mike what was planning on doing that day. Mike response. “Oh yah, me and my buddy are off to go snag the speed record on Brail Book!!”  (popular 5.8) Hans was not impressed.

I have met Han's before and i will agree that he comes off cocky and aggressive, but that is part of his makeup. Being confident and trying to be no.1 is ok with me. Speed climbing dose not intrest me much, but the negitive comments about han's bothered me. Don't be a poser because the guy likes being the best. Consider it a challenge, or disregard it. He has his way of climbing i have mine. I take the much more relaxed no need to be the best approch to climbing, but i sure respect han's drive to his best. So lay off until you really know the guy or climb the way he does.

I don't think of Hans as being a glory hog or a poser or anything like that, he's a nice guy and a good athlete...BUT for my money the only time El Cap has been climbed twice in one day was when Schultz and Croft did the Nose and Salathe in under 21 hours. They used no fixed lines to descend, no stashed food/water on ledges AND did full length routes, not 18 pitch sideshows...anybody else done the Nose/Salathe combo in a day? Lemme think...NO.

In reply to: You might want to take the 14er speed record up with Hans, since this information was pulled straight from his website. His website makes it clear what record he set. see speedclimb.com/14ers Lots of links to all the details, plus articles like summitpost & sports illustrated http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/siadventure/20/game_on/ http://www.summitpost.org/show/trip_report.pl/mountain_id/300/trip_report_id/62 1998 Florine & McBride 9.5 days 2001 Josh Swartz 5.98 days 2002 Jack McBroom 4.5 days 2003 Florine (skipping Williamson) 3.4 days What I really like about Josh's record in 2001 is he did it unsupported, with a Mazda 626, and added tips to help someone else to beat his record. Hans also gives beta & notes in the comments on his website. There are a few issues with the record. One is the closed season for Williamson for bighorn, and the other is whether to even include Shasta, and if so, is flying allowed (like Hans did) or should there be a set time, perhaps 12 hours for the drive? What's cool about this record is the amount of strategy & route planning, with added lessons from each attempt.
