I'm going to make a crash pad. It's going to be two sections of 2'x3'x3" of foam covered in nylon. I'm going to copy metolious's idea of 1' on closed cell foam and 2' of open cell foam, but which foam goes on the side i'll be falling on, and which goes on the side facing the ground? Also, what's the best (cheapest and easiest too) way to close up the pad. I know i'm supposed to leave one side openable to remove the foam, but should i use velcro or zippers or what?

i made one. Velcro works great. 2" velcro strips to seal the opening. if you want a squeeshy landing, use the open cell foam on the landing side. if you want a firmer landing, use the closed cell. I have 3" of open and 1" of closed. Squishiest thing at the crag. It rules. Also.. The 2 piece idea.. It's a good idea, but it's a BITCH to sew together. My next pad will be one piece of 48"x41"x2" and one piece of 48"x41"x1" so that i can fold them up instead of cutting in half because the hours spent sewing it because of the 2 pieces was not worth it. I'm currently drawing my new design, when i get the pattern worked out, i'll post it. Peaze frawg

Yeah if the closed cell foam is on top it will spread out the impact of the fall. If the open cell foam is on top it will be softer but more suceptable to bottoming out. So basically it doesn't matter what foam goes where because you can always flip your pad over. I would go with velcro, zippers are a pain.

i'm not going to be anal about his, but just so everyone knows, this has already be talked about and you could use the search to find your answers Now, i would say scrap the two piece idea, The last thing you want is a nice sharp rock sticking up in between your pad. now the angled edges on the metolius pads does decrease this a little, but yous till get a week, extremely soft part. go for the one piece

Use closed cell foam on top, open cell on bottom to ensure max lifetime of foam. Definitely velcro to seal on side. Enjoy!
