I would wager it has something to do with temperature, precipitation, etc.

In reply to: I would wager it has something to do with temperature, precipitation, etc. And are you familiar enough with the area to know when it usually reaches optimal conditions for ice climbing? Can you tell me the best time of year when to go? Or does it fluctuate from year to year? I have to ask since my state fluctuates in terms of ice climbs from year to year, so it's impossible to accurately predict. Sometimes we have ice, sometimes we don't. I was just hoping someone here could shed some light on it. Thanks for your input!

there's a bit of ice in indiana right now, and i just saw a pic of an ice climber at starved rock on msnbc.com... so i'd guess there IS ice right now in illinois. it's been a bit colder than indiana this winter. i'm actually going to see if a friend of mine wants to drive there to climb tomorrow. but starved rock/illinois fluctuates, much like indiana and other middle-midwest states.

It varies greatly depending on the year. The forecast is great this year though. I would plan for January-Febuary, but watch local temps for two or more solid weeks of 20F or lower. There are often spells of sub zero, thats when you want to plan a trip to Starved Rock. Plan on being over safe, use a double line and use natural anchors, do not trust the ice. Most of the falls have good size trees above to use. Also its easy enough to hike around and set your anchors prior to climbing, a nice safe perk. |
