Has anyone been to this Tishomingo State Park ? Any comments on it? Coming from Starkville, we usually hit Sandrock in Alabama- would love to find a closer spot.

I've been to Tishomingo St. Park a few times, not lately though Its an ok place I guess, after climbing in NC during college its hard to settle for what Tishomingo offers. Especially when i drive 3-4 hrs. for it. I believe the highest spot on the rock is a 60 ft. overhang called Jeans Overhang. I myself boulder and had to search pretty good for areas, there are some nice ones if you can find them. I've never been climbing over in AL so i can't compare them...would if i could though! Take it easy man...

I've been there once and didn't like it. I guess it might be OK if you just want to do some boulderering. Except for the overhang mentioned above (which looked REALLY hard to me), all the routes I saw were short, many less than 20ft. I didn't confirm this, cuz it started raining when I got there, but several people have told me that there's no happy medium there -- the routes are all either ridiculously easy or impossibly hard. I wouldn't go back, even though it's somewhat close to me -- I'd rather drive an extra hour or so and go up to S. IL.

I have climbed both Tishomingo and Sand Rock. Sand Rock is easily better. Tishomingo has moderate variety and few routes over 30'. Since the area surrounding Tishomingo is the last real rocky outcropping before dropping into the MS River basin, the different climbing features are spread out over a few miles of trails running around Bear Creek. Kinda annoying if you are used to having lots of elements in a small area. Since it is in a State Park, no bolts. Only trad or top rope. Not a bad place for a day trip, not bad at all for MS!! Beta: You can climb around the right side of Jean's Overhang for an easier route.
