I began rock climbing and mountain climbing a few years ago without thinking to tell my insurance companies that I have picked up a dangerous hobby. Now someone tells me that I am obligated to tell them and that they would refuse to pay me or my family without disclosure. I only climb a handful of times throughout the year. I do not want to say anything to the insurance companies just yet, not until I have a good idea of my options. Are there "Riders" that I can add just for trips or do I tell them and risk forever-high-premiums? What do you guys do?

Read the fine print and make sure there are no exclusions for rock climbing. (Some do, some don't). If they never asked you, and there are no exclusions, then there is no need to tell them and they will cover you if it happens. If however you filled out a sheet when you signed up and answered 'No' to a 'Do you rock climb' question, then it can get more complex. (If you were climbing at the time, then you could really be in trouble if they find out). If there are exclusions saying no rock climbing, then you just won't get covered for injuries sustained while climbing. (they will still cover stuff like that leg you broke falling off a ladder ;) ). Most insurance you get through an employer won't have exclusions against climbing, etc, but many 'independant' policies will. (risk pooling, etc).

If your talking health insurance? I have Golden Rule as I am self employed and they are fine with anything that you do as a hobby they do not even ask. They just do the health and family history and blood tests. However my key man life insurance policy that my business partner and I have is a whole different story. He smokes I do not, I had to answer yes to mountain and or rock climbing he did not and it made our policies about the same. They do not have to ask you the questions like do you sky dive or fly small aircraft, if you die and its included in the exclusions of your policy........I hate to say it but your dead and no one gets any money.
