My sister and I are going there in a week and a half and would like to stay in a private room at a fun hostel type place for a week. We would like to stay somewhere with a great vibe where we will be able to find other climbers to climb with and to hang out with at night. I have found Homero's, Quinta La Pagoda and Rancho Cerro Gordo. Anyone recommend one over the other? Gracias!

I stayed at Posado El Potrero Chico-cheap, close to the crag, tons of other climbers, food, camping and hotel all wrapped in one. They have a kitchen with all the cookwear & a fridge for your use- overall it was a great deal-I will surely stay there again...besides it's family-owned and operated. Contact Luis Lozano at posada@elpotrerochico.com.mx. He was a really nice guy, spoke good english, and did everything to help us out.

You want la posada.... rooms $35 dlls I think, food kitchen and lots of climbers if you go in high season..... dont really undersatnd what you mean by "hanging out at night" but dont think there will be parties every night. It is mostly laying back while having a couple of beers until you feel like sleeping. JC

I stayed at Homero's. They have a small restaurant with $3.00 meals at night, showers, a campground and a small house they rent out. It was a great place with plenty of climbers. Im envious, you will be pulling Mexican limestone soon and I will be still sitting at my computer.

Thanks everyone! So far Quinta La Pagoda is the only one to get back to us with availability. Still waiting to get a response from the Posada.

I stayed in la pagoda and their individual rooms were smallish; they had a large dorm type room that we used by ourselves. It is safe, close to Homero's (for food) and next to the crags. I would recommend it but you can also stop at each one and check em out first. M

I just got back from potrero and it's pretty rad. We stayed at Posada and that's where most of the climbers stayed. I thought it was the best place down there. There's more people and the place is really nice. The rooms are small but I would recommend just taking a tent and camping in the grass. It's warm at night and you save a lot more money that you could be spending buying beer or stuff at the market. With the showers and the kitchen there really isn't a reason to get a room. Just my thoughts

Thanks everyone! Leaving this saturday - staying at la posada. Also, is it best to take out some pesos from an ATM - or can you pretty much pay for everything with dollars? Thanks!

I hit up the ATM (It's a one room spot right next to the bus station in Hidalgo) and it cost $1.00 for each time. If you pay for everything in dollars the exchange you'll get is 10 pesos for a buck. If you exchange your money at the border I think it was some where around 11.19 pesos per dollar. Best to exchange your money at the border cause you'll need it anyways.

There is another ATM at the HBSC bank on the way in to the Potrero from town. It's got 2 terminals too. It will give you options for withdrawl in pesos, so don't make the mistake of thinking that "$100" means one hundred dollars. Most places will take dollars, but not american coin change. And, just like he said before, you'll get a crappy exchange rate from most places when you do use dollars, just because it's easier for them to make the conversion at 10 pesos to the dollar. My recommendation is to take just enough cash to get you into Mexico (EPC specifically) so that when you get there you can get your money from the ATM in pesos. This will also protect you from the possibility of losing your cash along the way (I've done that before - not fun!!) If you're driving down or back up to the states through the Toll roads (the only recommended road), your travel expenses will be about $50 each direction (or about 500 pesos) for gas & tolls to and from Hidalgo, N.L. (El Potrero Chico) to the border. I usually try to get several other people to pitch in and it makes it cheaper. That's great because I don't have to carry alot of cash!
