at the gym i go to sometimes, they have the figure 8 tied into the rope and all to have to do is put it through your harness and trace it. some people put a carabiner through one of the holes in the 8 and cliped it into there harness. the scary part is that they climbed 77 feet like this. its like a mirical that one of them didnt die or something. the person who was working in the gym went over and showed the how to do it correctly and they said "oh yeah" how do you forget you have to re trace it. these people were not new to climbing. they had climbed before stoped then started again. how can you forget you have to re trace it thats like forgetting you have to out the breaks on to stop a car. watch out for his next time your in the gym. it probly happens more often than we think

Must be the same guy who was at Cliffhangers,in Reading a few months ago.I noticed he was clipped in through the figure 8,by a biner,to his belay loop.He was being lowered and when he got to the bottom,I asked if he trusted climbing like that?He said it was better than how he could tie the damn knot(smartass).
If you are not willing to learn how to do something safely and correctly,you shouldn't be doing it!
I told him I would show him how to tie in,but,he said they were leaving,hope he learned by now,guess he just goes to another gym now.
