Anybody know the current restrictions for Cochise Dome? I've heard mumblings that the closures are "until further notice" with no date ranges. Anybody know anything about it?

Cochise Stronghold — Rockfellow Dome Complex Restriction extends from March 1 to June 30 and includes End Pinnacle, Chay Desa Tsay Pinnacle, Rockfellow Dome, Bastion Towers, Hawk Pinnacle and Lost Tower. Southern Arizona Climbers Coalition, Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Forest Service have been carrying out a peregrine falcon monitoring program since 1998 to identify nesting areas. This has allowed early lifting of restrictions at areas where there have been no signs of breeding activity. Contact: Gary Helbing - Wildlife Biologist, Douglas Ranger District Tel: 520.364.3468. To assist with the raptor monitoring program contact Diane Vetter, Southern Arizona Climbers Coalition Tel: 520.722.7330. http://www.accessfund.org/...ss/index.php#arizona Taken from the Access fund website. I believe the closure would include Cochise Dome or What's My Line Dome. Closures for Peregrines at Granite Mt. begin in early February so I am unsure why the beginning closure date is different for Cochise Stronghold.

In reply to: I believe the closure would include Cochise Dome or What's My Line Dome. Closures for Peregrines at Granite Mt. begin in early February so I am unsure why the beginning closure date is different for Cochise Stronghold. The ban at Granite Mountain was implemented a while before the Cochise ban and by a different regional agency (is Cochise NF?). The Prescott NF dudes have never been all that climber friendly as well. I've always thought the Granite Mountain ban seemed excessive considering it's much colder at GM than it is at Cochise and seems sorta nuts that the birds do okay with a shorter ban at Cochise Go figure. The window for nice climbing (temperature wise) at Granite Mountain is way too short these days. Since the ban at Granite Mtn was enacted, they've only opened it once in the spring because no chicks were in progress. That was one of the first two or three years it was in effect. These days, I doubt they even check to see. Park's closed...moose out front shoulda told ya.

We saw peregrines flying around at GM just two weeks ago, flying into nests near Green Savior. I agree GMs season is too short. As for the Peregrines though, it seems these closures worked, as it appears they are close to being removed from the endagered list. When that finally happens we can push to shorten or eliminate the closure times.

I just spoke with the Douglas Ranger District to confirm and was advised that the affected areas in Cochise are currently closed and are closed until further notice. Of course, the guy I talked to had to call someone else and call me back, so I'm thinking he may not know what he's talking about.
