Seriously, after climbing all weekend or week, how does one come back to dull, worthless reality of slaving away…for what?…the next time out on the rock? Is there anyone out there that can help me refocus once I am back dealing with traffic, bosses, working overtime, and not drift away to thinking of routes, or that one problem that you finally just pined? How can anyone get excited about anything else but looking forwarded to the next time you will be able to climb again?

In reply to: How can anyone get excited about anything else but looking forwarded to the next time you will be able to climb again? It's the work that helps you to appreciate the play. Get it man, the contrast. Also, you must consider the details of the next time you'll be able to climb. Think about the awesome pinic you are going to pack, the bread, the wine, the cheese, the perfectly ripe avocados carefully packed to discourage crushing, the dark chocolate. Then picture the amazing goddess you'll be sharing these priceless moments with..........now get back to work, you gotta make some money.

Yeah, its all about the relationships you form, and you can get that without climbing at all.

I haven't found away to cope. It's not so much climbing as it is being out on the road, or with the people I love and both things are very far away. Weekend trips help, but they just don't quite see me through. I just lie awake, unable to think clearly yet unable to stop thinking. If I am lucky I can manage a way to get sufficiently drunk or stoned so as to simply numb my head enough to let me sleep, but I mostly refuse to spend the money 'cause I gots ta save. Largely I just cross off the days on my calendar as they go by and hope to feel better the next morning knowing that sooner or later my misery will end (uh... in a long awaited road trip, not death or nothin' like that).

SEX (in between climbing) Yep - I agree with jumpingrock, minus all the references to boobies and female ass.

To answer the question: whatever you happen to be fetishizing at the moment. This will change. One year it will be climbing. (Obviously.) Another year it will be some person who represents the beauty of creation itself. (Obviously.) Another year it will be your children. (Obviously.) Another year you'll be pulling your hair out trying to figure why you should stay alive at all. Then it will be something else. This is life. Enjoy it. You'll be dead soon.

It bums me out when I hear climbers say this. There is way more to life than climbing. I've been pretty pissy lately as I'm over-booked with a bunch of jobs and responsibilities, so last night after class I decided to go see "Sideways" with a friend. The movie is shot about forty minutes south of me and full of memories of my brother's rehearsal dinner, feeding Emus, etc. I got out of the movie and went downtown to the independent coffee shop to meet a friend to study. I had a little time and I usually never "meander" but going by the shops and the park, and seeing the regular 'characters' of SLO . . . going into the shop to be surprised by a photographic exhibit of SURPRISE Joshua Tree (and White Sands, NM - which I've also been to) . . . this is the stuff of life. If we slow down and see the details, everything is bareable.

My daughters. My wife. My life. Food on the table and a roof over our heads. In that order. DMT

my world pretty much goes in this order: my wife the dog climbing other shit i do when not climbing as much as i'd love to just climb every day, that would be a pretty shallow life, and working so hard to take care of the family makes the time spent climbing just that much more sweet.
