I have decided to spoil myself today after my stupid, stupid midterm - and I am going to buy a crapload of CDs. RC.com has been good to me by recommending bands such as Old 97s and Hawksley Workman, but let's up the ante.

as of right now i am listening to a band called piano magic....it is rad....nothing to do with the piano though but damn fine music
Fiery Furnaces are rad...out there but really cool!
new band called Grizzly Bear....they are folk with a lot of electronic rock influences...AWESOME

I also am listening to a CD by Bebel Gilberto right now, kind of new school Brazilian Bossa Nova. It's ultra-smooth-tasty...

I recently picked up Uncle Tupelo Anthology on vinyl and have been quite pleased with it. I've been listening to a quite a bit of My Morning Jacket lately. I bought their live at Bonnaroo show and it's fantastic. I think I'll have to go to that festival this year just to see My Morning Jacket.

I think it's funny that punk rockers can be such music snobs. It's like someone who only listens to jazz and thinks other genres aren't good enough. The only difference is that punk rock is rarely that good.

Lately its been Paul Curreri thats been in my cd changer the longest. He plays a sort of modern folk. His first cd "From Long Gone to Hawkmoth" is his best in my opinion, and his other two have their hits but overall not as upbeat.

I was listening to a cassette tape of proto-punk my brother made for me years ago with these bands:
MC5
The Standells
Sam the Sham
Killdozer
and others. Can't stand Killdozer. Their vocals suck bigtime. Sam the Sham is friggin' great! "Banned in Boston" is my current favorite.
I've had 20 different landlords in, 20 different weeeks
I'm proud to say that my best friends are Boston's biggest freaks.
The Standells are cool, too. "Good Guys Don't Wear White" is cool.

Wow iltripp, it's been a while since we've sparred in community, so here goes another round:
a. Punks are not snobs since punk is a compilation of many genres, including old school rock n' roll, blues, and reggea. Punk can even be better described as "punk" (quotations are deliberate in this case) since the genre comes in many forms including Oi!, skinhead, hardcore, ska, and even pop. Punk has come from whole bands and individual songwriters alike, and enjoys the same complex legitimacy as any musical form out there.
b. Punk music was great music, even if at first it only sounds like three-chord fooling around. Punk introduced new explorations into music by first abandoning many if it's rules that became pre-set standards over time. Johnny Rotten could care less about being "on pitch or key" and the Ramones weren't too concerned with meter or octaves. They were more focused on a raw, emotive impulsivenss. The ensuing genres known in general as "punk" evelved definate usage of guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and even piano and saxaphone (Infa-Riot, Blitz, and X-Ray spex amongst others).
Having been a violin player myself and a joyful listener to classical radio stations, punk can be listened to with the same educated ear as symphony or jazz amongst others. A better example can be culled from the homes of punks. I once crashed at the house of the Bouncing Soles in Hoboken, N.J. Along with stacks of punk CDs, the 'Soles also owned an exstensive collection of jazz, classical, and varied other forms of music.
Remember, at one point Jackson Pollack was a far cry from, say Robert Estes, David Hockney, or Homer Winslow. Now Pollack is studied from the same books that contain the likes of Picasso or Rembrant.

Nowadays, spoiling oneself musically is going out to buy an iPod instead of a stack of CD's. Then again, if the music that you want is to obscure for, say iTunes or Napster, then you'll just have to go out and buy CDs.
Yes Maculated, if you haven't done so yet, skip the CDs and some climbing gear, and go git yo'self an iPod (and none of the girlypussy mini 5GB colored crap. Be a man and hook up with at least 20Gigs!). THAT would be spoiling yourself!
BTW Maculated, what was your midterm on and how did you do?

To be honest, I was just messing with you. You don't have to write a dissertation on the merits of punk music.
I actually like punk music quite a bit, although there are (as in every genre) bands that are what I like to call, no-talent-hacks. Punk's never been my favourite genre, but there are definitely aspects of it that I like a lot. My comment was really directed at your tone: "for crying out loud, get yourself some punk fucking rock". I have a lot of friends who listen to punk and they have a similar attitude towards it.
So there you have it, jpearl. Until the next Israel-Palestine thread, I leave you to your punk rock and your conservative rambling. :wink:
