I filed all my tech tool adzes down. I've gone to all hammers on my new waterfall ice tools actually.....

Reason will become clear when the tool decides to blow and cleave your eye/skull/nose/etc.......

If you don't use 'em you can always unbolt/cut 'em off too....

sharpen your adze and it becomes a more efficient tool for chopping away rotten ice. you do this for various reasons, but two of the more common ones are to get at better ice in which to sink a screw, and to chop bollards.

if you're on a long route and have to chop a bivvy ledge, it's much easier to do with a sharp adze.

as for catching an adze in the face ... hey, it happens. do it once, though, and it will be a long time before you do it again.

by the way ... i just got in from a long day of climbing ice in a full-blown blizzard. it's getting really good here in colorado.

I filed the shop corners off my adzes on my technical axes so when I do take an adze to the face it does a little more or less damage depending on if sharp pointy would have meant a cleaner cut then the blunt edge I filed down to. Either way you definitely will remember the adze is pretty dangerous when a tool pops in your face.
