i worked at a shop that rents these things out and have seen them used and abused and while they will wear out like everything else, if you're going into a canyon i can't think of anything i'd rather be wearing. with a pair of neoprene socks on your feet will stay warm and you'll have great traction in the water. they hike surprisingly well but if you're neoprene socks are dry and you're hiking for a while in the hot sun you're going to get really uncomfortably warm.
