not a great anchor 1 out of 5 stars

Review by: caughtinside, 2008-03-05

I saw a few other reviews on these and thought I'd add somthing. Because both hangers are the same shape and face the same direction, they dont' truly distribute the load evenly. Eventually (usually pretty quickly) the left hanger will become a spinner because it is pulled to the right, just from rapping. poorly designed.

I have a mixed opinion on the Metolius Rap Hangers. As has already been pointed out, they are not as easy to rap from because you have to clip the same hanger you run the rope through, but on the other hand, they discourage toproping through them.

If you're going through the trouble of bolting a route you might as well use stainless fixe ring anchors, or the traditional chains.

I really dislike Metolius Rap hangers because, they are tough to clip because they are so thick. Because you need to clip the same hole as the rope is threaded through they can be even tougher to get your biners back out. Their biggest flaw is that they twist the hell out of your rope. Never lower through them because they will twist the rope even more than pulling it through unweighted. On the plus side (if you still use carbon steel bolts) they are made out of Cromoly instead of Stainless. This means the hanger will rust and be a visual sign that the bolt is probably more corroded and needs to be replaced.

i like the rap hangers alot because then you dont have to deal with people top roping through chains and wearing them out. in the long run you dont have to replace them as often as chains or ring hangers.
