Though I've never belay with this device, I've been on the climbing end enough to know that it sucks. It has the jerkiest lower of any device I've ever used. My brother got one in a package from Acme. Don't buy one.

I have to disagree with geckoee, it IS a good belay device, kinda auto-locking, too, just don´t trust it for autolocking, and for rappel, you can use it backwards, so it won´t lock up.

This A.T.C., not to be confused with Black Diamonds ATC, locks up on a fall, and has to be manually unlocked after the climber gets back on the rock. On a plus side, It has a nice quick catch that takes almost no strength to hold. I wonder if Nelson’s ATC also stands for “Air Traffic Control?”
However, two major draw backs as I see them are:
1. You have to taking your guide hand off the rope every time it locks up.
2. The locking action makes for a terrible repel device. Slip-Snag-Slip-Snag all the way down. I went back to my figure eight for repels.
Summary: spend the money and get a real ATC, not this cheep imitation.
