If you need real catching, locking and holding power this is a good one. My 95 pound girlfriend has taken over this guy. She needed an agressive device to catch me ( 195 pound) on my big whipper.
I don't like to rappel on the Jaws side, it catches the rope and does not slide through as smooth as I like. It would be great for someone learning to rappel because it does not take much effort to slow down or stop. When I rappel using it, I flip it over and use the smooth side. It raps ez from that side. It also works well with skinny rope..

It works like an ATC but grips better when I lock down. I love it and so do the climbers I belay. Sometimes though, on a belay, the rope might run into the other slot and if you are lowering the climber, this coils up the rope. So put the rope back in the correct slot (keep your kungfu grip on the rope always) before lowering and it'll be fine.

his device has great braking power due to the jaws. I usually belay heavier climbers and this device holds well requiring less hand strength. However, the jaws sit on a thin flange and it can cause the rope sheath to slide against the core and occasionally cause some rope kinking. It's noticable on rappell. It has noticably more bite strength than BD ATC XP.

I've used this for about two years now and love it. I have both a regular ATC-type device and the Jaws and I have no idea why anyone would not buy the Jaws. For belaying, it has great holding power and everything and for rapelling, like other people have said, just turn it around. I've used it climbing trad, sport, and in the gym, and i dont have a single complaint about it. Great for beginners and experts.
