durability lacking 3 out of 5 stars

Review by: btg, 2008-10-19

I work for a midwest college leading climbing trips, mostly top rope stuff with a little lead to set the routes and have found the Top Gun to not hold up that well. We have four of them from the past two or three years and they are all wearing out unusually fast really bad fraying, sheath slippage, and they kink like the dickens. And this is on TR with little rock abbrasion, hang dogging by students and no falls. On paper they looked good but once uncoiled they did not live up to the standard. Other people here have a better opinion so maybe I just had a few bad apples but I will not bother to buy any more to test.

I have been using this rope for 1.5 years now and it's pretty toasted. It was slick as can be when I first got it but it is a 10.5 so it still was manageable. After that it flattened out which is annoying but not terrible. Then however the sheath slipped some and the core twisted which is a pain. Now though one side has obvious signs of more wear than the other for the first 40 ft and I wouldn't lead that side anymore.

On the up side this rope has gone everywhere been beat up in the desert, forest, on sandstone, granite, quartzite, has done it all. It was however always cleaned off and kept in a rope bag afterwards.

I have logged about 300 pitches on this rope.

I wouldn't buy it again, it was my first rope and I expected more life out of it.

I love my Topgun, basically all the points that have been said I would agree with, except that it kinks too much, i find this rope better than most other ones I've used.

So smooth

I am on my third Top Gun and I concur that they are great ropes. They handle great and provide an oh so soft catch, perfect for trad. I haven't had any problems with kinking although, I have had the flatening. I am not worried about it though because my PMI rope did the same thing. probably something to do with the soft catch. After some rather harsh abuse my sheath has shown very little signs of wear. One other feature of this rope which has yet to be mentioned is that it passes the new UIAA "sharp edge" test, always a nice addition.
I only have one major complaint and that is that this rope feels rather heavy compared to my same diameter maxim.

this is a great rope for a climbing begginer. also a great all-arounder. it only kinks a little too much. so only a 4, but if yore looking for your first rope, look no further.
