The Bible.

It covers all aspects of mountainering. You'll want more indepth info for activities you do alot of, but if you can only afford one book, this is the one.

Edition 7!!! I make new people read this book before they can go outside. If you haven't read this book, I suggest putting off your next trip and spend the weekend reading this.

If only all climbers would read this book before roping up--there would be far fewer accidents and rescue situations. This book is the definitive source on all aspects of climbing. I feel that learning to climb from this book is better than learning from most "climbers". I started with Edition 4--and while the book has lost its tongue-in-cheek humor, the info keeps getting better and better.
