I SIMPLY LOVE THIS PACK: I'm new to rock climbing, and after my first season packing gear around with an old army duffle bag decided I needed something more convenient, but equally big and easy to cram with gear.

After several online searches I found the Atom Smasher and was impressed with the simple but stout design. It's perfect for my needs. I found, as other reviewers pointed out, that if I pack soft goods on the carrying side it's completely comfortable...even on the longer approaches.

I'm very satisfied with the Atom Smasher, and with FISH PRODUCTS ability to make such an affordable pack and deliver it before the due date they promised. Go FISH!

-- It doesnt carry well as a backpack but it really isnt designed to. I add a small rectangular piece of foam with ducttape to the back if needing to hike for a while.

I bought mine on special from the Fish and have been beating the crap out of it for 5 years now. It's solid and I use it for all sorts of things. Not real comfortable for walking around, but that's not what it's for. As a bag for protecting your water and food and warm clothes, though, it is great. For an overnight I think it's perfect. If you have to haul, this would be a good choice (provided you don't need a ton of water, a thick sleeping bag, or 50 lbs. of iron).

The atom smasher is one of my most versatile pieces of gear. In my opinion this thing shouldn't just be in the "Aid" section but should also be wherever the crag packs are cause this thing is THE BEST CRAG PACK OUT THERE. PERIOD.

For Grade V walls with natural ledges, an Atom Smasher will hold your sleeping bag, bivy, water, pad, food and clothing. Wear your harness and rack, put on your Atom Smasher, and you are set to go. No grievous hauling necessary and it'll force you to pack smart. 1 each for you and your partner and all of a sudden you're a big wall climber.

As a crag pack the Atom Smasher has no peer. Just cut out a thin slice of foam and leave it in the bottom of the pack permanently and you've got a worry-free crag pack that will survive anything. Mine is burly enough to last through many seasons of ass-dragging approaches and descents in Joshua Tree and has been hauled up a couple of walls so it'll survive whatever you can dish out.

Packing advice - Put some clothing (a fleece jacket for instance) between you and the hard objects and it'll carry as well as any Bora Bora Designs pack.
