I use my Gri-Gri when teaching new climbers, otherwise I use an ATC. Use it in the gym all the time. Easy on the hands. The auto breaking can make the belayer feel too "relaxed" and ignore the danger and responsibility of a belayer.

The Figure 8 is great for repelling. The one thing that I don't like about them is how it twists the rope. Belaying on sport routes with the Figure 8 is hard on feeding the rope through.

This was my second choice for a shoe, due to the lack of climbing stores in the area. The shoe fits well and I can wear the for a long time (hours) without having to take them off. They are a good all around shoe, but their strongest point are cracks. I find smearing is not what I found in 5-10s and edging is not what I wanted either. This would be another good beginners shoe.
