The Birdtail Rock was named by early day fur trappers, and was a campsite on the wagon road established in 1860 by Army Captain John Mullan. Know as the Mullan road it connected Walla Walla Washington to Fort Benton Montana. Serving Miners and homesteaders bound for the far west. The gravestone reads Maggie Pip 1852-1870.
