Ambia versus the V2 on the Submarine

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Ambia versus the V2 on the Submarine

Problem #33 - a 2 starred V2 on the Submarine Boulder at Spittle Hill, Castle Hill. A fun lil' problem consisting of smears, pockets and a bit of grunt! If you're a shorty like me, use your foot on the under-cave at the beginning!

Climbing Within The Storm

Average Rating = 3.88/5 Climbing Within The Storm

I took this photo while having a quick morning climb at Castle Hill while on my trip to NZ. The route is called orifice fish v3. I don't know the names of the two climbers, but when I spoke to them they mentioned they were from the surounding area. It was sunny and warm in the basin while snowing on the mountian peaks around me. I can't wait to go back with more time and climb some of this amazing rock. We are doing our best to corrupt him into a crack climber. Slip and slide, and try his best not to jam, we will eventually succeed. Photo by socialclimber

Phil McKrakin, one of the finest limestone cracks around.

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Phil McKrakin, one of the finest limestone cracks around.

Graded at 18 (5.10a), but the lichen and very thin gear at the top make this seem a bit harder. Great route anyway, especially considering it is one of the better ones around. Photo by socialclimber

*thunk* *thunk*, the soothing sound of hollow limestone....

Average Rating = 0.00/5 *thunk* *thunk*, the soothing sound of hollow limestone....

Unfortunately, the flake that makes up the left side of Phil McKrakin just keeps getting thinner and thinner the higher you go. The jams are solid, the feet thin, and there is a high bolt, so it is all good! Photo by socialclimber

Tricams are your friends

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Tricams are your friends

Phil McKrakin is a pretty typical limestone crack. Irregular enough for cams to be bit questionable, but not enough for wires to be solid. Small tricams to the rescue! Photo by socialclimber

Mmmmm, solid finger jams....

Average Rating = 3.50/5 Mmmmm, solid finger jams....

The top section of Phil McKrakin is just a series of solid finger locks, one after the other. Unfortunately, the feet and gear are rediculously thin, which would probably explain the bolt. Photo by socialclimber

Trying Beautiful Edges (V4) at Spittle Hill

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Trying Beautiful Edges (V4) at Spittle Hill

I had seen this problem on rc.com and told Gary (socialclimber) I wanted to try it before we left. An area classic, which means polished by years of muddy boulder shoes. I only made it part of the way. Gary (spotting) made it to the top, but couldn't finish. Maybe next time!

This route has large moves between jugs with a dyno towards the top, a super fun problem, except for the polished foot holds.

Me on Beautiful Edges. V4

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Me on Beautiful Edges. V4

Me on a recent trip to Castle Hill basin. Beautiful Edges is one of the most popular climbs in Spittle Hill. It is big edges going up to a sloper and some slight crimps and big top out.
