Adan Martinez on the First Pitch of Dark Star

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Adan Martinez on the First Pitch of Dark Star

Adan Martinez climbing the first pitch on Dark Star. The first pitch is the technical crux -- thin 5.10b first thing in the morning. Up above is an unprotected 5.8 chimney but in between there's a lot of low fifth class and fourth class. But it is a lot of terrain to cover in a day.

Chillin on the summit block.

Average Rating = 4.00/5 Chillin on the summit block.

Hainging out on the summit block of Thunderbolt. This last 15 feet of rock has defeated many climbers, however the registry is located below the block. I wonder how many people have signed it without actually reaching this summit. Somebody really should mount it back on the true summit where it belongs.

at the second belay of the chimney variation

Average Rating = 0.00/5 at the second belay of the chimney variation

This climb was a great 4 day excursion into the outdoors. Started it off with a nice hike out of big pine to about 10,500 and made our first camp. From there we headed up on the second day to make camp just before the terminal morain of the palisade glacier at about 12,200. Day three we summited north pal via the U-notch couloir and the chimney variation then climbed and hiked all the way back down to 10,000. A great climb!!

Dan Rampe and Adan Martinez Below Temple Crag

Average Rating = 2.00/5 Dan Rampe and Adan Martinez Below Temple Crag

Temple Crag offers some of the longest backcountry routes in the Sierra Nevada. Climb any of the great routes on Temple Crag - Moon Goddess Arete, Venusian Arete, Sun Ribbon Arete, Dark Star, Barefoot Bynum - and then move camp further up the hill to the base of the Palisades glacier (quickly melting out) and jump on Swiss Arete on Mt. Sill, U-Notch, V-Notch, North Palisades and more.

Palisades Glacier

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Palisades Glacier

This is stitch of three photos I took in late summer/early fall 2004. The U-notch is visible just left of the horizontal snow band (ner the center of the photo). The V0notch is laft of that. This my first time on ice (thanks John!!). The U-notch was melted out on the right side, making it about a 70 degree slope (instead of the advertised 40 degrees). We generally stuck to the right side of the climb, but higher up, we had to traverse left, which required a bit of simul-climbing.

At the top of the V notch with my partner, Dille's, head in the way. This is where we took off the crampons and did a few hundred more feet of easy rock to the ridge. Awesome route!

Dan Rampe Getting Ready for Some Temple Cragging

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Dan Rampe Getting Ready for Some Temple Cragging

Dan Rampe at the base of Temple Crag. This is a High Sierra playground. Set up a base camp at Temple Crag and pick your route - Venusian Arete, Moon Goddess Arete, Sun Ribbon Arete, Dark Star, Barefoot Bynam. When you're done here, move your camp up the hill to the base of the Palisade Glacier and pick off a route du jour: Swiss Arete on Mt. Sill, U-Notch, V-Noth, North Palisade, Polemonium Peak.
