Frank working the Big Pow Wow

Average Rating = 4.00/5 Frank working the Big Pow Wow

One of the longest climbs at the Ruins. 5.10 and a little bit of everything. It was a little warm in May, but worth every greasy hold.

Nick E.

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Nick E.

Unknamed problem (V0+) far out at Windy Point. There are is a lot of potential in this area, and bouldering abounds, despite the focus on hundreds of sport climbs, everywhere.

Excellent new routes at Munchkinland!

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Excellent new routes at Munchkinland!

Not a bad day for arriving at 3:30pm! The six of us managed to share 4 exciting moderates in the chimney area. Frank (left) & Nick (right) arriving at the anchors of each climb. Blue skies, warm air, beautiful rock. What more could we ask for?!

Unknown Roadside Boulder

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Unknown Roadside Boulder

A little less than half way between Needles and Blythe, on our way back to Tucson, we pulled over to the side of the road with our new portable climbing wall, and found ourselves amongst a slew of basalt boulders. Have they been climbed? Probably. Does it matter? Not really. We we just excited to take a brake from 14 straight hours of driving to climb something other than fiberglass and resin! This was a great problem, and though time was short, there were literally hundreds - if not thousands - more littered on both sides of the road. Will we go back? Maybe some day... but now we can add a little flavor to our ever growing feast of places to climb in the west! I love the desert! If you want directions, it's not hard to find. If you live in Needles or Blythe and haven't climbed there, I'm very supprised. It's worth an afternoon of climbing now and then. These rocks deserve some more love!

Figure 8 Wind Chime

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Figure 8 Wind Chime

Okay, since I've boycotted figure 8's for belaying or rappelling, and since I hate to throw away gear, my wife had a great idea to make a wind chime. A little fishing line and a caribiner, and, voila!

Beautiful day.

Average Rating = 3.45/5 Beautiful day.

Hitchcock Pinnacle holds a certain degree of nostalgia for every climber who's ever been on it. Fun, easy, striking... It was my first lead in 1998. The day this photo was taken, I took several people climbing for the first time. Hitchcock Pinnacle will for ever be the first rock climbing experience had for Andrea, Jenna, and Mike. Photographer: Robert Higginson.

Canon Ball!!!!

Average Rating = 2.86/5 Canon Ball!!!!

In life, sometimes taking a leap is the scariest thing we can do... and the results are sometimes completely out of our hands. "PS" -Don't worry, Lloyd is just fine... the falls are only 100 feet high.

Mark in the West Gulley

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Mark in the West Gulley

Don't let the apparent low angle fool you. Elephant Head is backcountry fun that can go downhill real quick if you aren't prepared. But the view is worth every drop of blood!

North Face of Elephant Head

Average Rating = 2.33/5 North Face of Elephant Head

I can't believe this wall hasn't been developed more. It seems to have some sort of stigma... but there is so much rock! It can go ignored forever. Bob Kerry left us a nice description of ONE route on the North Face. How is it there aren't a dozen more!!!!! Who's with me?

Steve

Average Rating = 3.40/5 Steve

Our trip to the Outback on Mt. Lemmon was full of suprises... This 5.10, however, held no suprises for Steve, and he cruised it like the wind was picking him up from below... which was actually one of the suprises we experienced that weekend. 50+ mph winds does not a happy climber make. Notice the date in the corner (4-15), well, NO SUPRISE, none of us did our taxes that day!

King Fuzzie's Navel

Average Rating = 3.40/5 King Fuzzie's Navel

This was the FA of this fantastic, somewhat high, problem. Just one of many new problems at Fuzzie World. The area is still under development, so contact with the "developers" prior to going would be appreciated, though of course not required...

This is King Fuzzie.

Average Rating = 2.88/5 This is King Fuzzie.

The first time we found Fuzzie World, King Fuzzie was definately the center of attention. I think the beauty of this boulder speaks for itself... it just needs a little chalk dust! :)

Mark on Nemesis

Average Rating = 3.50/5 Mark on Nemesis

Here Mark makes another attempt on Nemesis... he is very persistent and has bloodied his tips on more than one occasion trying to put this problem together. It got the best of him, though, and the rest of is, and is still unfinished.

Cactus Climbing!

Average Rating = 3.40/5 Cactus Climbing!

This cactus is on the trail to the main wall, and poses quite a challenging boulder problem! Spineless climbers need not apply! I have yet to top out... the holds just get sharper and sharper the higher you go...

Start 'em young!

Average Rating = 3.73/5 Start 'em young!

This is my nephew Isaac bouldering for the first time at age 1 1/2. I was so proud! His mother wasn't too excited though... but isn't he the cutest kid! He'll be climbing 5.12's in no time!

Beautiful approach.

Average Rating = 3.73/5 Beautiful approach.

At nearly 1000 feet, word has it "Absinthe of Mallet" is the longest climb in Arizona with such a short approach. 30 minutes (or less) puts you at the base of this amazing dome.

Absinthe of Mallet, 5.9

Average Rating = 3.10/5 Absinthe of Mallet, 5.9

This is the new finish put up by Scott Ayers. Here Fletcher leads the final pitch of the climb. This is the second of 2 165' pitches to the right of the gully/chimney where the old finish use to be. Talk about burning up the calves!

Seth, 5.10

Average Rating = 3.25/5 Seth, 5.10

This was a perfect day of climbing... and Seth chose NOT to wear his climbing shoes. He lead this climb, (and others) in his 5.10 APPROACH shoes. I was impressed.

Paria Canyon Sandstone

Average Rating = 3.38/5 Paria Canyon Sandstone

My roomate and I somehow got it in our heads to hike 30 miles in a day and a half through Paria Canyon and The Buckskin Gulch. The sandstone was AMAZING! This shot was just a glimpse of the amazing scenery throughout the trip...

The Offwidth Dream.

Average Rating = 3.47/5 The Offwidth Dream.

If you're a lover of offwidths, tell me if this doesn't make your mouth water!? Paria Canyon/Buckskin Gulch was full of the most amazing, perfect, beautiful sandstone cracks I have ever seen. And I'd venture to say most or all of them are unclimbed. Next time I go back, I'll be taking my gear!

Picacho Peak @75MPH!

Average Rating = 3.44/5 Picacho Peak @75MPH!

This shot took at least a half-dozen tries, but was worth the effort. Just goes to show that AZ will always have the most beautiful sunsets in the world!!!

Crack Climbing on Mt. Lemmon!?

Average Rating = 3.33/5 Crack Climbing on Mt. Lemmon!?

This is a beautiful route (Bender-Axen, 5.8) on Rappel Rock. First time back after a broken hand and three months of AZ fires, what a beautiful day, and a great way to jump back in to things!
