Gallow's Edge Area at White Rock

Average Rating = 0.00/5 Gallow's Edge Area at White Rock

This is a shot of the Gallow's Edge area at White Rock, New Mexico. It's an excellent area for beginning leaders and for taking first time climbers. There are a dozen routes, most of them 5.7-5.8, with 1 5.5 trad route and 1 5.6 sport route. The rope in the picture is up on the 5.6, Princess Buttercup.

Pete Schoening & Grandpa on Rainier

Average Rating = 3.67/5 Pete Schoening & Grandpa on Rainier

This is my Grandfather talking with Pete Schoening at Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier in 1962 (Mt. St. Helens in the background). That's Pete in the center of the shot with the rag and goggles on his head, and Grandpa next to him. These two men inspired me to start mountaineering, and one of those ices axes in the photo is what I used on my first climb. My Grandfather introduced Pete to mountaineering (on Mt. Adams) when Pete was 18 and working for my Grandfather, who was District Ranger of the Randle district on the Columbia National Forest (later renamed the Gifford Pinchot National Forest).

Camp Ingraham from the top of Disapointment Cleaver

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Camp Ingraham from the top of Disapointment Cleaver

Ingraham Flats, taken on descent, from the top of Disapointment Cleaver. Our tents are the ones closest to Cathedral Rocks. You can see the route running right between our tents and the RMI tents. The storm clouds rising up beat us to camp.

Peter with Mt. Whitney East Buttress background

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Peter with Mt. Whitney East Buttress background

This is a self portrait taken at Iceburg Lake with the East side of Mt. Whitney in the background. Snapped this one in the spring of 2002 the evening before our attempt on the East Buttress route. The approach hike was interesting, especially the ledges.

Peter leading TAD on Devil's Tower

Average Rating = 2.71/5 Peter leading TAD on Devil's Tower

This is me leading pitch 1 of the TAD route on Devil's Tower in August 2002. Great rock with incredibly clean lines! It's only 5.7, but when the guide book says sustained, believe it! The entertaining part was listening to the comments of tourists below, "look at those crazy people", "how do they get their ropes down?"

The Jump

Average Rating = 5.00/5 The Jump

Making the jump at the top of Snakeshead. Although this is a solo, I have a rope because I dragged a party up with me and I belayed them across the jump before I did it.
