The Book of Solemnity, 5.10a

Average Rating = 3.25/5 The Book of Solemnity, 5.10a

Just past the crux on the mega-classic first pitch of the Book. Bright sun, a slight breeze, solid rock, and great partners. This is climbing!

Old Gear #2

Average Rating = 3.36/5 Old Gear #2

Another pic of some old gear. At top is a Goldline rope. Beneath that is a Swami belt, a 4" wide waist band that was used as a harness without leg loops (I climbed both Half Dome and El Cap in this one). The shoes on the left are the Boreal Fire (pronounced fee-ray), the very first sticky rubber shoe, introduced to the US in 1983. Under that is a Dolomite GB, similar to the PAs from the 1960s. The shoes on the right are EB's circa 1978, one of which is equipped with a leather reinforcement to the ankle area that was de rigeur at the time. The gear, from top to bottom, is a Sticht belay plate, a SMC Camlock, a Forrest Titon, and a self drilling 1/4" bolt with handle. It's a wonder I'm still alive today...

Climbing Wall

Average Rating = 3.64/5 Climbing Wall

This is a picture of the climbing wall that I built for the New Durham (NH) Elementary school. After raising the funds, designing and building the wall, and showing the PE teachers how to belay, the kids are now enjoying climbing in school. Notice that the "Old Man of the Mountains" lives on in the upper left corner!

Tom Sciolino on

Average Rating = 4.08/5 Tom Sciolino on

Tom Sciolino leads the second pitch of "Repentance". This unique angle was the result of taking the photo from a hanging belay just after the crux ice curtain and overhang that normally starts the second pitch. I can't begin to tell you how happy I was that he didn't fall here, if you get my "point".

Papillons Ridge, Aiguille du Peigne

Average Rating = 3.85/5 Papillons Ridge, Aiguille du Peigne

The Papillons Ridge on the Aiguille du Peigne is one of the most spectacular alpine routes that I have ever been on. Located in the French Alps just outside of Chamonix means that you not only get to blast up a great climb, but then ride the telepherique back down into town afterwards for some beer and pastries. And beer.

Meaghan on

Average Rating = 3.36/5 Meaghan on "Debbie Does CPR"

Meaghan leads her first 5.11, "Debbie Does CPR" at Rumney, NH. The crux sequence involves getting a leg bar under a body sized roof so that you can reach out to some small holds over the lip. Once the feet cut loose you smear them over the lip and make a long reach for a hidden pocket which allows you to make a hard rock-over move.
