Offering some of the best and most versatile climbing in the country, road trippers would do well to include Colorado on their tick list. With the multi-pitch, upper-grade trad lines in Eldorado Canyon, variable multi-pitch ascents in the Flatirons, alpine climbing in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness, short sport pitches of Rifle, granite bouldering in Skyland, short work-out sport routes at Golden Cliffs and Garden of the Gods, and driving access to the off-widths of Vedauwoo, any climber can keep him/herself in superb climbing shape in the mountain state. Year-round possibilities for sport, trad, or alpine ascents are not out of the question and a close look at weather patterns yield superb climbing booty. Colorado sports 53 official peaks at 14,000 feet or more, and well over 300 13ers to “peak” your interest. First ascents are still waiting in the pristine backcountry that makes this state so wild. Spend a week here, and you’ll feel as if you’ve spent a lifetime. |
