Ascent Note
A nice solo lead on my own device. This route has a surprising mix of cracks from hand size to offwidth. The Atlas says 5.2, but there is no way a 5.2 can be this challenging a lead. I'm good with the rating here on rc.com.

Ascent Note
My first trad lead belay. It was my first time on the route and I sent it, buuutttt, I was seconding Jimmy's first trad lead. It was more than a top rope because I was cleaning and I did it without weighting the rope. Heck, call it what you want but I had a blast.

Hang Dog ascent by: oldsalt on 2006-04-01
(View Climbing Log)
Ascent Note
Sent with whining listed below....
It nearly beat me after spending the morning on the Main Face and hiking down. I never put my full weight on the rope, but I did step on a bolt that was right smack in the middle of the only foot placement that I could see at the time. "Hangdog" is appropriate.

Ascent Note
I sent the route as test of my solo lead device. It was my first on-sight solo lead, and very much fun.
Like other routes on this crag, the crux is low and the climbing gets easier as you go up.

Ascent Note
Solo lead, both pitches on-sight. It was the first time that I completed a climb with the Guardian, my own device.
One of the best climbing days of my life. Words fail, so....

Ascent Note
I seconded Jimmy's onsight lead cleanly despite a thunderstorm. I found one cam that had wandered into a larger space behind the opening. It rattled, but had to be triggered to get it out.
The storm found me about 20' from the anchors. I was very scared of the lightning and of doing a 180' rappel in the rain. Jimmy descended first and it seemed to me that he should have only been about half-way when the ropes jumped up slack.
I thought he had fallen and then I immediately heard, "Off rappel, Steve!" My rappel was really fun after that.

Ascent Note
We linked these 3 pitches with those of My Route. It was first multipitch more than 2 pitches and our first multipitch as a group of 3 climbers. We all did our leads onsight. Wonderful exposure.

Ascent Note
1st visit: my 2nd climb; TR failed (rain)...
2nd visit: my 1st lead; failed (rain)...
3rd visit: my 3rd solo lead; easy as pie when dry...
4th visit: my 6th solo lead; first with latest prototype. It left me stuck at the first bolt, and I ended up leaving a nice wiregate (no more quicklinks - I didn't realize that this was not a good practice).
