I wasn't a very good climber at the time and used three pitons of aid on the first 30 feet. Because it had action sections separated by good rest spots I called it Pony Express. It had probably been done long before by 60's climbers. When Gene put together guidebook material he used the "Pony Express" name I suggested for it.

Led the first pitch and followed the roof pitch. It was the first time I ever had to hook my heel on the lip of a roof. The first ascent party has my deep respect!

Took my first leader fall on a cold December day because I did not move left far enough at the crux. Tried to go straight up, with hands getting cold. Commited another move to reach for a nice fat crystal which turned out to be rounded on top. Fell 25 feet on the 8mm rope which I had tied around my waist with a bowline. Came back a week later and finished the route.

Used to be rated 5.6 in the 1967 "high Over Boulder" guide. It starts so suddenly right off the road that it was hard to get warmed up for the climbing.

5 out of 5 stars Ascent Note

Inspired by the stories of the Vulgarians, I did a free solo on a perfect summer morning. It went easily but my mouth was really dry after the last move.
