An ascender is a device used for ascending up a rope, they can be used for solo rock climber and in places where climbing is not possible. The ascender is attached to the climbers harness and the rope via a connector such as a carabiner, and it functions by being able to slide up the rope and clamp when weighted by means of a cam within the device.
