It is essential to have the right gear when planning a caving expedition. Basic caving equipment should consist of proper caving clothing which are warm, quick drying, and lightweight; protective headwear with mounted headlamp; sturdy footwear, generally boots which offer good traction on all surfaces, wet or dry; a waist belt can also be handy for carrying small extras including spare batteries for head lamp, keys or other personal items; gloves are also optional in wet conditions.
