Review 5 out of 5 stars

Review by: l_equitius, 2006-03-23

I saw Alpinist on the newsstand and I was very impressed. I was not a climber then, but now I am a beginner. I also bought all the back issues and I hope to finish reading them all by the end of this winter. All issues are in my library right next to National Geographic, although it doesn't have anything like the subject diversity Alpinist is much higher quality. NatGeo used to be a membership, but I don't feel that way now, it seems too corporate now.
Anyway, the photography in Alpinist is outstanding and the stories or travel logs are, or give the appearance of being, written contemporary to the events described. Each issue I've read also has at least one article of climbing history. Great stuff.
I've read the other reviews and I do see that each one has valid points. I happen to believe that Alpinist is well worth the price, regardless of editorial content.
De gustibus non disputatem. (there is no disputing matters of taste, or I like red wine and you like beer, cheers to us all)!

This is the most aesthetically pleasing periodical I've ever seen. I haven't read the articles much because I'm too poor to buy one, but out of the two I've read I didn't get that egotistical slant that others have talked about. Rags like Outside don't begin to compare with their yuppie-gear reviews and ads that remind me of Old Navy.

best climbing mag out today if you're into the subject matter. very few ads. coffee-table-book quality photography. specialized? of course. it's not called climbing anything, anywhere, anytime. elitist? definitely, but, hey, isn't it justified? go put your life on the line in the mountains, do something hard and committing, and then compare that to hang dogging your proj. serious? come on. they just did an article on smoking up and pulling down. best climbing mag out today, if you're into it.

The best magazine there is on alpinism. Well... the Mountain Info on British High Magazine is good, too... Don't expect to find any sport climbing between the covers. Instead, you'll find beautiful pictures of remote places, long stories and rough opinions.
