Compact enough to fit into the corner of a daypack, the soft, silky-feeling Siltarp 1 is extremely light. This rectangular tarp can be set up on hiking poles, slung from trees, or attached as a tent awning. An excellent companion to a bivy sack, this tarp lets you keep your head out in the air without soaking your bivy’s interior.
The parachute nylon fabric does not stop water by brute barrier strength the way that conventional polyurethane-coated tarp fabrics do, so this tarp’s fabric has no waterproof to “mm” rating. Instead, its silicone impregnation causes water to bead up and roll off magically, preventing water from exerting pressure against the fabric. When this extraordinary water repellency is combined with taut and steep rigging, the tarp acts like it’s waterproof, just as an umbrella made with fabric that is technically not “waterproof” provides excellent rain protection.
