Huairou is located north of Beijing and is home to the China Mountaineering Association compound. The CMA maintains an outdoor climbing gym, which was recently expanded. Outside the city, there is reportedly a sizeable cliff that is being developed for climbing.
Many granite cliffs skirt the mountain slopes when driving some 30 to 35km straight north from Huairou and wait to be developed. It is in fact the same type of mountains and rock as found in the neighboring valley, Bai He River (Bai He has nearly 100 established routes spread over a couple of crags).
