About South:

Directions: Use the coordinates below with Google maps for precise directions. Zatsun tunnel is 2 hours from Kadena AB, Gate 1, using highway 58 or 1.5 hours from Kadena AB, Gate 1, using the Express way toll road costing around 600-700 Yen ($6.50-$7.50) one way. If you%u2019re the only person in the world that doesn%u2019t use Google maps than just take Highway 58 north until you come across the third tunnel labeled Zatsun tunnel on the left of the tunnel entrance. It%u2019s pretty much on the top north end of the island. About: Zatsun tunnel is an awesome climbing area especially for Okinawa and its infamous sharp coral walls. The rock is the ideal climbing texture. It's grippy and not abrasive which is great for the moist area. The wall is partially submersed in the water so it%u2019s a definitely a beach side climb. The rock seems to be some kind of sandstone. If you go on a clear hot summer day you can catch shade before noon but you will be fully exposed thereafter. There are a couple nice areas to get in the water within sight from the climbing area so it works out for an all-day event. There's 5.9%u2019s to 5.12%u2019s on the south side wall with few low angle and more slightly overhanging. I%u2019m guessing there are about eight routes on the south side wall. The sport protection looks plentiful and looks solid. Tested and approved! Most of the anchors look to be stainless steel Fixe hangers and bolts. There are good Fixe rap ring anchors to set up top rope from. There are also some backup anchors for your top rope as well. There are a couple belay station anchors to tie into while belaying on the uneven rock. The protection was placed well. Thanks to the route setter! The area can also be climbed trad. All in all I would say Zatsun tunnel is well worth the trip.
Approach: From the parking area to the south wall is a 3-5 minute approach if walking. Parking is just across the street from the south side tunnel entrance. The coordinates below lead to the parking area. You will be able to see the south wall from the parking area. If you use Google maps and use "satellite view" and use "street view" you can check out that entire area from ground level. Awesome! Hike from the parking area to the entrance of the tunnel and the south wall will be on your left. Immediately left of the south end tunnel entrance should be a drop off. At that corner where the drop off wall meets the tunnel entrance wall there should be a 2x6 piece to cross from the road to the beach. The approach from there will be obvious.
