About Mt. Somers:

Here is one of the few places in New Zealand where you can find real crack climbing. Some of the longer lines stretch out to 3 pitches, the shorter lines are as low as 10m. grades range between 14 and 23. The higher grade lines tend to be bold and sustained.
Nearest town or city: Ashburton
Directions: Full directions are in the various guides. Sharplin Falls Reserve, where you start walking for Mt Somers, is about 1-1.5 hours drive from Christchurch or Ashburton. The walk to the Hut from the carpark will take approx 3-4hours at reasonable pace. The beginning and end of the walk are steep. There are several stream and river crossings but unless there has been recent heavy rain, you need not get wet. the climbing base, Pinnacles Hut, is still 20minutes to 1h+ from the crags, depending where you want to go.
