This absolutely picturesque spot, the jewel of the North Island's climbing scene, is located on tribal Maori land. They allow us access... please do your best to keep it this way. Upon arriving (unless it's late), head along the beach to the trailer with the "Climbers Pay Here" sign. Check in, meet the lovely lady in charge, sign the visitors book. She doesn't sell gear or guides. It costs $10 per night/day to camp and climb. They use the money to improve the roads and facilities in their tiny community.
Please be respectful. Don't drive past the Marae. Camp in the areas designated for climbers. Swim only north of the river mouth, and don't swim nude. Keep voices down; they echo through the Bay. Try to refrain from swearing. Pack out rubbish, put out fires, NO DOGS! This is an amazing spot, and we are their guests. Be respectful. They ALLOW us to climb here.
