About Blowhard Bush:
Three areas in the reserve itself, apparently: Devil's Seat: the boulders visible just off Napier-Taihape Road. 14 boulders, mostly highball, slightly steep, delicate pocket pulling on solid limestone. Troglodyte Boulder: follow the Troglodyte Track from the carpark for 5 minutes to the 40m long, 4m high, steep limestone boulder. DO NOT DEFOLIATE the top of this boulder--the Blowhard is a scenic reserve. There is a massive amount of potential for devlopment here. Utopia Cave: take your gummies and walk down the stream from the first bridge on the main track until you find an 18m long roof with small stalactites. Most of the problems here are V6+ at present. |

Directions: | Take the Napier-Taihape road from Napier up into the Ruahine Range. Blowhard Bush is on your right shortly after the road ceases to be metalled. Overnight camping in the shelter is expected, but not technically accepted. Please treat the area with respect, as access is sensitive. Toilets are available at the shelter. No fires, so keep stoves in the shelter. No petrol/food nearby, so fill up. Boil water from stream. Lake for swimming further down the road on the left, but the weather is almost always FREEZING cold, so pack accordingly. |
