Description:

The Gouter Route has become the "ordinary route" for climbing Mont Blanc. From a technical mountaineering point of view, it is the least difficult route, but it shouldn't be under-estimated. The climb to the Gouter hut is not a simple stroll along a path, the climb to the summit is over glaciated terrain and you have to cope with the altitude. In the middle of the summer the large numbers of climbers on this route also increases the objective dangers: stone fall, queues at the narrowest part of the Bosses Ridge, crowding in the hut(!). Fortunately, these irritants do not make the route any less interesting: the "Roof of Europe" is a beautiful mountain and to climb it, even by the ordinary route , is still a magnificent experience. The climb up the Aiguille do Gouter be head-torch, the slow ascent of the Dome, followed by the narrow Bosses Ridge, lit up by the morning sun, forge indelible images in the minds of those who venture to these heights. Francois Damilano, Mont Blanc 4808m (guide book, english version)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Mountain

Afternoon tram to Nid d'Aiguile. Climbed to Goûter Refuge, arriving at 20:30. Woke up at 2:00 and reached summit by 8:00. Back at to Goûter Refuge by 11:00. Left Goûter Refuge by 12:00 and back at Nid d'Aguile by 15:00. Our inability to sleep on the floor (I forgot my sleeping mat and the room was quite noisy) of the Goûter hut meant that we were really tired on the summit day and our rate of ascent was much slower than we could have otherwise maintained. Other than that, however, the whole trip was remarkably uneventful and the weather was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful weather to be on top of western Europe

Very enjoyable day to be on the mountain. There was little wind and a lot of sun. The descent from the Gouter Hut is always painful. Some people were very pushy on the summit ridge, which makes for some uneasy moments. This seemed to be the norm vice the exception the closer you got to the summit.

5 out of 5 stars First Time Failure Once Again

It seems I just can not get it right on my first attempt to climb any mountain except Mt. Elbert. The wind was around 60-70km on summit day and so I decided to turn around just above the Vallot Hut around 4462m. I will try again in the future, but better prepared for the wind.

Ensure you have a reservation at the Gouter Hut. There is no need to bring tents or sleeping bags, this will save you a lot of weight in your pack. The approach to the Gouter Hut take roughly 5 hours from the last stop on the train during summer conditions. Be aware of idiots when you are climbing the ridge below the Gouter Hut. I gave the route a PG13 for safety because of the potential rock fall on the approach to the Gouter Hut and the sheer number of climbers on the approach who are being guided and know nothing about climbing or mountaineering. Traffic was horrible for us on the descent from the Gouter Hut. Traffic above the hut to the summit was mild.

Overall this was the greatest mountaineering trip I have done. I will be headed back to finish the climb.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty

Great couple of days out. Sprinting across the grand colouir a little scary and dodging rocks kicked loose by punters.
