About Saoû - La Poupoune:

La Poupoune is this rock formation looking like a teton that you can see from the village of Saoû when looking northwest, just right of the west extremity (La Roche Colombe) of the perched synclinal (so is called the forest of Saoû, because it is on an elevated U-shaped geological fold...).
La Poupoune is divided into two levels : the base which has two sections "Attentat au Picodon" (the picodon is a local stinkin' goat cheese) on the left and ""Choucas" (which is a small raven) on the right. The upper level is called "Champagne pour tout le monde" and has many routes with only one going on top of the rock formation.
La Poupoune is made of a limestone with an excellent friction, often a bit sandy while the upper level limestone has a lot of flints which offer excellent holds! The lower level offers 1 or 2 pitch routes. The only 4 pitch route (La Poupoune aux Choucas which is beautiful) goes through the 2 levels with a last length of 45 meters. This is sport climbing, but you can put some pro in the cracks if you want.
Looking South, it's hidden from the north wind and can be climbed in sunny winter days, but it's definitely warm in summer time, which is long there...

TAKE SOME WATER and some suncream. MAKE NO FIRE. Cautious bivy WITH NO TENT.
Don't forget to drink some beer or a coffee in the village in L'Oiseau sur sa branche or to buy some local beer at the brewery Markus.

Nearest town or city: Saoû, Montélimar
From the church of the village of Saoû, drive carefully in direction of La Roche Colombe / La Poupoune, first inside the village then on a dirt road going up left of a cereal field then among the trees. Park at the "Insurgents of 1851" Memorial! (less than 5 minutes).
Then walk up past the wooden climbing post for 15 minutes on the path. When this path steepens, be ready to turn right to go the lower level, or to walk 5 more minutes to reach the upper level (with a carabiner on a wooden post).
From the top of La Poupoune, walk down instead of rappeling, the top anchor is not properly set and the rope might be difficult to rappel.
