About Greifensteine:

Small area of free-standing rocks up to 30 meters (100 ft) high. There are 6 rock towers you can climb on. The rock is granite and peculiarly shaped. It looks like somebody stacked a bunch of sand bags on top of each other. Geologists call it woolsack erosion. This makes the climbing here technically very intricate with good balance required and many contorted positions. The area has a rich history and includes an open air theater. Climbing is prohibited during shows. Routes are generally well protected using nuts, cams, slings, big ringbolts and bolts in newer routes. Use of chalk is discouraged.
