Military base during the Soviet rule, the port of Sevastopol (or Sebastopol) dates back to the Greek times, when the ancient city of Chersonesus was founded there by the merchants. The old empire of Kiyivska Rus' was christened here by its ruler Volodymyr in 988 (orthodox version - sorry, the Pope didn't market things enough during those years). Several wars were also going on around the place, such as the Crimean war (1853-1856) and the WWII. Several museums in the city can help you reconnect with its history.
